Helping hatch a baby chick

I needed to help hatch an 18 day baby chick in distress. 2 Hens had eaten 1/3 of the shell leaving the inner membraine intact but dried out except for a small hole near the chicks beak. The chick was chirping, coughing and sputtering. The hens then expelled the egg/chick from the nest so I brought the egg into my art studio where I turned up the heat and a humidifier. I placed the egg inside a roll of tape (to hold it in place) near the window in the sun (which is why the light seems to flicker.) This video is taken over the courseof many hours. First I used blunt end needle nose pliers to slide under the dried membraine and then slid very fine sharp sissors between the membrane and sissors and cut it open little by little. The membrane was far to tough to tear withmy bare fingers. After peeling away each bit of membrane I waited at least 1 hour in hopes of seeing some progress on the chicks part. But each time the chick continued it’s peeping and coughing. Once the dried membrane was removed from the portion exposed by the hens I waited many hours and rotated the egg a bit so the baby could simply get up and out. In the end I titlted the egg so the baby could kick and roll itself out which it did. I then cut the flesh connecting the chick to the remaining yolk and egg as close to the shell end as possable. Then I placed the chick under the hens who shared the nest teh chick came from. One hen seemed to view the chick as a preditor so I stayed in teh coop for a while hand

Warning: for inexperienced animal people the failure rate for trying to handraise a baby mouse is around 75%. It is very painful loosing a baby mouse because you get to love them so much. Think carefully about it before you try. Problem Solving II Dandruff symptoms: flaky skin on surface of fur cause: dead skin cells being pushed up by growing hair, no adult mice to groom baby treatment: nothing needs to be done outcome: baby will live :) Fussy Baby symptoms: baby refuses to eat very much or at all cause: baby not used to eating from a paintbrush, misses its mom, does not like new food, especially electrolytes, baby too cold, baby weak, something wrong with the baby treatment: persistence, keep on trying for ten tries, if still not eating give up until next feeding, keep room temperature above 20 degrees Celcius, half a day without much food is OK but longer than that there is something else wrong outcome: if can get baby to eat enough even if it takes longer, then baby will live, if baby does not eat for 24 hours then baby will most likely die Purring symptoms: baby makes repetitive clicking sound when full and feeling safe, warm, loved and content, may also grind teeth cause: baby mouse is purring because it is happy treatment: nothing needs to be done outcome: baby will live :) Scruffy Stage symptoms: baby is small for its age, has scruffy, uneven fur and may also have a few bald patches, may also be slightly pot bellied. usually occurs between 10 and 30 days of age

Are Your Kids Missing Out on Key Vitamins and Minerals?

New research confirms that vitamin D deficiency is common among kids. Previous research has shown that as many as 3 out of 4 kids in America are falling short of getting the recommended amounts of vitamin D and calcium from their dietsnutrients that – help build strong bones and may have other important health benefits. But how can you get more of these powerhouse nutrients into kids diets? Many researchers are finding that time in the sun alone isnt enough to help the body produce the amount of vitamin D kids need, and, as most parents know, kids are not likely to develop a sudden fondness for vitamin D-rich sardines. But dietitian Kathleen Zelman says breakfast can be part of the solution.. Following the lead of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), which doubled its vitamin D recommendations for all kids, a new Institute of Medicine committee is currently reviewing recent research to determine whether to raise the daily recommended intake (DRI) of vitamin D as well. Meanwhile, moms everywhere are looking for ways to fit more vitamin D and calcium into their kids diets. In this SMT, Kathleen Zelman will share simple, fast ideas that make it easy to help kids start every day with a nutritious, affordable and easy-to-prepare meal. For more information about the benefits of calcium and vitamin D, go to www.eatright.org More About Kathleen Zelman: Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD/LD, is a prominent registered dietitian, author, educator and an award winning journalist for her
